When Do You Know You Are An Avid Reader?
Have you ever been asked, “Were you born with a book in your hand?” Some people would flee with a mere mention about reading; some would never take up a book in the hand unless compelled to, some might hate reading when they were young but learned to appreciate books while growing up, some would have been a fan of reading poetry but feel indifferent towards novels. In contrast, others would have a love-hate relationship with books. But it was never the case with you–you have been fascinated with books even before you started walking, a day without reading feels impossible to imagine, they are your very lifeblood.
If you are thinking that you are a big reader, such that you would dress up as Belle in a fancy dress competition without a second thought, or would definitely end up getting Hermione Granger in a Harry Potter quiz just because you’re a total bookworm, then here’s a list that would let you know if you’re an avid reader.
#Always looking forward to learning:
You have a natural urge to know more, delve deep into your favourite topics, discover new areas of interest every day, and for doing that you are naturally drawn into books. One book follows another, and soon you are submerged in a sky-scraping pile of knowledge hubs, but still you pine for more. The hunger for learning is never satiated.
You are a well-known face in all the libraries and bookstores within your reach. Whenever a chance of an outing arrives, the first destination in your mind is the library. The librarians and shopkeepers are tired with assisting you and dealing with your endless queries. They are having a hard time in keeping up with your reading pace and updating their stocks accordingly. Well, an avid reader is in the house!
You are the easiest to satisfy when it comes to choosing a gift. Getting a birthday present for you is a no-brainer–always books, there’s never another option, no other alternative. You’ve preferred books over toys, chocolates or dresses since the early days of childhood and the love remains intact.
Logic and reason–what’s that? While the people around you are busy deciphering the ways of the world and calculating the odds and evens of life, you are busy conjuring your dream world, castles on the cloud, imagining wizards and unicorns, and travelling through outer space meeting aliens. Every time you hear a story from a friend, the first thought that crosses your mind is “this would make a great book!” You are all prepared to become the next bestselling author; the universe would revere.
#You’re generally empathetic:
Studies show that people who are avid fiction readers are generally more empathetic in nature as reading stimulates those emotions in the brain. You understand a person better, relate to their circumstances and are able to find solutions easily because your mind is seasoned to seek out in-depth knowledge from three countless pages. You are a pro in reading between the lines, and you often seem to forget whether an incident occurred to you in person or to book character.
#You are a word-lover:
You have an incredible, well-stocked vocabulary, and it keeps on expanding. You are a person who has always loved words, simple or complex, large or small and you are still looking forward to learn myriad terms to express your emotions fully–even finding complicated synonyms for simple ideas. You have a notebook filled your favourite quotes and are even able to recite some from memory.
#Book Over Movie:
No matter how good a movie is our how close the plotline of the movie is to the original script of the book, you will choose the book over the movie any day. The joy is doubled when you find someone with a similar outlook, and you can discuss the pros and cons together. It is the best day when someone reads your favourite book and loves it–now you can share your love, you don’t have to gush over the plot twist alone!
#Bedtime is your favourite:
Bedtime is hands down your favourite time of the day. When you were a kid, bedtime meant storytime–when your parents would narrate all the mysteries of the worlds unknown, and you would listen with your mouth hanging open. Now that you have grown, bedtime means that you can stay up all night reading your favourite books besides the night lamp, while your parents thought you’re asleep.
All these have sealed your fate as an avid reader–you were born to be one!
