Shiv Sena, BJP Workers Clash In Mumbai Over Ayodhya Land Deal

Shiv Sena and BJP workers clashed in Mumbai’s Dadar area on Wednesday during a demonstration by the youth wing of the opposition party against Sena’s statement on the alleged scam in the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

The Mumbai Police used force to disperse the supporters of both the parties and took several persons in custody. The Sena said they had received information that the BJP workers were coming to vandalise the party office.

BJP has alleged that Sena workers assaulted a woman member of the party.

The trouble started after the BJP took out a protest march towards Shiv Sena’s office in Dadar over an editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’. The editorial called for an inquiry into the “suspicious” land purchase deal by the Ram Mandir trust in Ayodhya. The trust, however, has denied the allegations.

“We were first told that BJP workers were coming to protest, later we learnt that they are coming to vandalise the Sena Bhavan. So we stopped them before they could reach near it,” Sena MLA Sada Sarvankar was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Accusing Sena of “defaming Lord Ram”, BJP leader Ashish Shelar said, “the Sena was once proud of the demolition of the Babri mosque, but now for political reasons it is defaming Lord Ram. Sonia or Vadra (Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra) have now become the Sena’s deities”.

The police have registered FIRs in the incident against the supporters of the two parties and took several in custody. However, nobody had been arrested till late in the evening, an officer said.

The Shiv Sena and BJP broke off their decades-old alliance after the 2019 Assembly elections in Maharashtra over the chief minister post.
