Seventeen years on and we still remember the day and night efforts made by our Indian Soldiers to kill the intruders who barged upon the Indian soil. 26th July is proudly celebrated as the Kargil Vijay Diwas, marking our victory against Pakistan. Kargil is situated 205 km from Srinagar. Operation Vijay, as it was called, continued for over 60 days. After a heroic battle and innumerous loss of lives, our tricolor rose gallantly above our acme.

On this day, thousands of Indians remember the sacrifices made by the Indian Soldiers and pay heartfelt tribute to those 527 soldiers who lost their lives in Kargil War. Every year, the Prime Minister offers his condolences and pays tribute at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate.

In May 1999, the Pakistani Armed Forces sent a few of its troops to the India Line Of Control (LOC) aiming to take over Kashmir and Ladakh. Their operation was called “Operation Badr”. The total area captured by them was immense. To take down the Pakistani Armed Forces off Indian soil, about 2,00,000 Indian troops were asked to report as soon as possible. The then Pakistan’s Army Chief, Parvez Musharraf, is presumed to be the architect of this plan while Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, claims to be completely unaware of these movements.

The battle was fought at an altitude of 18,000 feet with highly low temperatures. The main area where the war was fought was at one of the highest peaks in Drass-Kargil area, Tiger Hill. With a ferocious war for the next 60 days, the Indian Army took back our land, eradicating all the intruders.

Due to this move by Pakistan, it’s reputation fell down in the eyes of most of the international countries. However, India gained plausibility. This bloodied war cost the lives of nearly 500 soldiers and left thousands of others injured on both the sides.

26th July marks extraordinary intelligence and dearly sacrifices made by our Indian Army. This day commemorates their sacrifices as well as celebrates India’s victory over Pakistan. The 17th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas holds greater importance and is celebrated all over the nation.
With immense patriotism in each and every citizen of India, our country can withstand any difficult situation it is placed it and India will win more such wars to come.
