Indian women has no say whatsoever over how they want to look what they want to wear. We are constantly told what to wear and what to avoid.
We love our culture and are proud of it. But do we really know what it means? Because some people think anyone who doesn’t fit in their definition of Indian culture should be shamed. That too proudly, then it hardly matters if the person is a global icon or sports person. You should wear what Indian culture wants you to wear your clothes isn’t really your choice. Something similar happens to Priyanka Chopra when she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Berlin. Prime Minister is on four-nation tour and Priyanka to promote her new movie Baywatch.
“ Was such a lovely coincidence to be in #berlin at the same time as the Prime Minister.
Thank you @narendramodi Sir for taking the time from your packed schedule to meet me this morning.” Priyanka Chopra (Instagram)
The actress was excited to meet the PM hence took to social media and thanked him for making the time to meet her. But the main focus was not this it was about, She wore a dress in front of our PM a man who is as old as her late father. And that dress she wore revealed her legs. What a shame!
People are asking her where are her sanskars how dare she sits cross-legged in front of our PM. Then what is the correct posture for a woman to sit; if she is sitting wide legged she’s asking for it, sitting cross-legged it is indecent and disrespectful.
After she posted the picture it didn’t take long when her ” not so sanskari dress ” became a topic of conversation with several comments on how it insulted Modi and Indian culture.
But here’s where she went wrong , it is a fact that she is an educated, successful and self-made independent women; her hard work and sincere efforts have helped her put herself on international platform with grace; who forgot that people back home have small mindset and these patriarchs of Indian culture think it is their duty to safeguard Indian culture by deciding what women should wear.
Have a look at the pieces of advice she received:
here is one more set of advice
But Priyanka replied to all the trolls with just one picture on Instagram. The post received more than 100,000 likes in just four hours.
“Legs for days….. #itsthegenes with @madhuchopra nights out in #Berlin #beingbaywatch -Priyanka Chopra (Instagram)
On one hand, she is allowed to wear any outfits on various talk shows and events but to meet PM she should wear a sanskari outfit why? It is simply easy to sit behind your computer screens and shame people and teach them Indian sanskriti and culture. I don’t think any Indian culture teaches you to troll or shame a woman publicly. Does a women’s dress length define her respect for elders? Why is a woman categorized according to the length of her dress? If Priyanka’s legs are the first thing you notice in the picture then what needs to be corrected is your mindset and not her dress.
And this isn’t about Priyanka Chopra but it is about every woman who is made to feel like she is an object. But the silver lining is the fact that women are now standing up to this. And are no more afraid to call out on all such remarks neither on the internet nor in real life.
