From agriculture land to Chief of ISRO Dr Kailasavadivoo Sivan (K.Sivan) fulfilled his aim of life to become a scientist and work for the nation’s upliftment. K. Sivan, a space scientist from Tamil Nadu, becomes the ninth head of the 50-year-old organisation succeeding A.S.Kiran Kumar. In the last two month, the journey of the Chandrayaan-2 mission led by ISRO scientists under K.Sivan is one of the things every Indian is proud of. Let’s look at the lesser-known facts and accomplishments of K. Sivan, the rocket scientist.

  EARLY LIFE Of K. SIVAN

  1. Born in a farmer family in Tarakkanvilai village of Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. He completed his elementary education in Tamil medium government schools. A confident and hard-working person from the school days, Sivan taught himself without any guidance and helped from family as well as tuitions and became the first graduate from his family.

    ACADEMIC GROUND

  2. In the year 1980, Sivan completed his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) and then went for a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from IISC Bengaluru.
  3. Sivan completed his PhD from IIT Bombay and also holds an Honorary Doctorate in Science from Sathyabama University, received in 2014.

    ENTRY To ISRO

  4. He joined the ISRO in 1982. In ISRO, Sivan joined the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) project where he contributed to the planning, designing, integration as well as analysis of the mission.
  5. In his career span of around 30 years, he has worked in projects like GSLV, PSLV, and GSLV Mk-III and worked as the Project Director of GSLV rocket.

    ACHIEVEMENTS of K.SIVAN

  6. For his contribution in space research, Sivan has received many awards like the Shri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research Award (1999), ISRO Merit Award in 2007, and Dr Biren Roy Space Science Award in 2011.
  7. Sivan is also a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), Indian Systems Society for Science and Engineering, Aeronautical Society of India (ASI), and Systems Society of India (SSI).
  8. With his expertise in all areas of vehicle launching, he published the book “Integrated Design for Space Transportation System” in the year 2015.

    CONTRIBUTION FOR NATION

  9. Sivan worked as the director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, before he took charge as the Chairman of ISRO.
  10. India set a world record in the year 2017, February by launching 104 satellites with a single flight of PSLV and Dr.Sivan played a crucial role in making that record.
  11. In the first year of his three-year as chief of ISRO, two important missions for him was the launch of Chandrayaan-2 and the developmental flight of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-MK3) in April.
