Oh, Are You A Vegetarian?

One of my friends asked me “How do you survive just by eating grass?” I was shocked at first, like what are you talking? Then I realise oh yeah… he means how I survive only on veggies. A common question all the vegetarians are asked. For non-vegetarians, we might be people who eat the food of animals. However, let me clear this to you; we are more than just people who eat plants.

Leonardo Da Vinci rightly said, ” My body will not be a tomb for other creatures.”

I’m not here to offend anyone; it is your wish to eat what your taste buds prefer. Indian constitution has allowed this right to you as well.

Now let me bring it to why we have a day for Vegetarians – It is a day of celebration founded by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977. It is backed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978, “To promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism.” It draws awareness to the ethical, environmental, health, and humanitarian gains of a vegetarian lifestyle.

World Vegetarian Day remarks the month of October as Vegetarian Awareness Month, which concludes on November 1, World Vegan Day, as the end of that month of celebration. Vegetarian Awareness Month has been known varyingly as “Reverence for Life” month, “Month of Vegetarian Food“, and more.

Let me bring in front of you some impressive figures and facts:

India (38%) bags the first place in terms of having a large number of vegetarians population, but do you know which state in India has the most number of vegetarians? Well, according to a 2014 survey released by the registrar general of India, Rajasthan has the highest fraction of vegetarians: 74.9%.

The second country with the highest number of vegetarianism would be a bit shocking for you, as it is Israel (13%). Vegetarianism in the country is credited to Judaism which limits the consumption of animals. Vegetarianism in Israel is steadily becoming a lifestyle choice, even for those who identify as non-religious.

You will be shocked to know that some of the celebs whom you die heart fans of are also vegetarians. Bollywood Industry has quite a good number of actors and actress who have opted or moved to be vegetarians. Namely, Sonam Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Sonakshi Sinha, Anushka Sharma, John Abraham and the list is a never-ending trail. Some opted to be vegetarians due to health issues, as others some as they adore the animals.

To all the veggie-lover, Happy World Vegetarian Day.
