Assam Eases COVID-19 Curbs In Districts, Warns Against Laxity

The Assam government on Monday relaxed the coronavirus-induced restrictions in several districts after observing a declining positivity rate in the state.

The state government has allowed the movement of individuals in eight districts – South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Majuli, West Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Charaideo and Udalguri – from 5 am to 5 pm daily.

These eight districts have been recording less than 400 daily cases for the past 10 days.

However, the state government said some districts, where cases are still showing an upward trend, will remain under tight scrutiny and warned of imposing stringent curbs if they don’t show any sign of improvement.

“Districts where the total number of cumulative cases and per day cases are still showing persistently high numbers, especially Cachar, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur and Nagaon will be under close watch. In case there is no improvement in the COVID status in these districts, stricter restrictions may follow,” the revised guidelines stated.

The fresh SOPs further directed District Magistrates to notify containment zones and take the required steps to stop the spread of the coronavirus in the area.

“In case the test positivity of COVID-19 in any area reaches 5 per cent or more in urban areas and 10 per cent or more in rural areas in the past one week, District Magistrates will notify such areas as containment zones and ensure necessary containment measures,” the SOPs said.

There will be a total ban on the movement of people between 2 pm and 5 am every day in Kamrup metropolitan district.

Assam’s COVID-19 caseload increased to 4,85,310 on Monday as 2,805 more people tested positive for the infection. With 35 more death in 24 hours, the coronavirus death count in the state reached 4,243, the National Health Mission bulletin said.

Till Monday, The north-eastern state has vaccinated 56,89,544 people against the novel coronavirus.
