Volkswagen the German car manufacturer launched Ameo -its maiden sub 4 SUV venture in Pune on Wednesday. The Ameo which the company says is designed especially for Indian roads was first showcased at the Delhi auto show in the beginning of this year.
While the price range for the car is yet to be announced, the company said it has invested Rs 720 crore in developing Ameo. The Ameo will be manufactured at the Chakan facility of the company which now sees three shifts working. This model was developed in a record time period of around three years and will be available in showrooms for sale soon.
The first sub-4 meter sedan from VW, the Ameo will be offered in two engine options – a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, MPFI petrol and a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder TDI diesel. While the petrol model, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, will develop 74bhp and 110Nm, the diesel motor (with a 7-Speed DSG Automatic) will produce 88bhp and 230Nm. Both these engines are the same that do duty in the VW Polo as well.
Besides engines, the Ameo will also share its platform with VW Polo. In terms of design and looks as well, Ameo looks identical to the Polo as there is no major difference between the two vehicles until the B-pillar. It’s only the extended boot that makes the sub-compact sedan look different from the Polo.
And like most of its rivals, the Ameo’s rear too looks a compromised one to keep the length below the sub-4 meter. Similar to other Volkswagen cars in India, the VW Ameo tool will get front airbags and anti-lock braking system (ABS) as standard across all trims including the base one.
The top-of-the-line variant will get features such as rain-sensing wipers with static cornering, cruise control, touchscreen MirrorLink system,leather wrapped steering wheel & gear knob,alloy wheels, automatic climate control, electrically adjustable wing mirrors, rear AC vents, and automatic wipers.
