The Indian Team is participating in 18 sporting categories in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Having been a part of every Summer Olympics since 1920, India is one of the largest contingents of the games ever.
The first day was challenging for the Indian Men’s archery team as they struggled to make an impact. Archer, Atanu Das finished at 35th position with 653 points after 72 shots. Pravin Jadhav finishes at 31st position with 656 points, Tarundeep Rai at 37th position with 652 points.
In women’s archery, Deepika Kumari scored 663 points in 72 shots to finish in the 9th position in the Ranking Round. She qualified for the next round and will be now competing in the semi-finals.
The second day opened with weightlifter Mirabai Chanu winning a silver medal in the 49kg women’s weightlifting competition. The silver medallist might also stand a chance to win the gold medal as the Chinese Gold medallist, Hou Zhihui is being investigated for doping.
Ace Shuttler PV Sindhu also qualified for the next round after winning against Ksenia Polikarpova of Israel.
Indian Olympic rowers Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal performed brilliantly in the rowing race. They have not only qualified for the semi-finals but have also set a new record for India’s performance at the rowing event at the Olympics
It is the first time that the nation will have representation at this position of the Olympics in the rowing category. The previous best by an Indian rower was the 13th place finish by Dattu Bokanal in men’s single sculls at the Rio Olympics.
The rest of the second day was disappointing for India as the country saw many upsets across several sports. The Indian men’s hockey team lost in their game against Australia. In table tennis, G Sathiyan went down fighting 3-4 in the first round. He could not live up to the expectation. The Indian shooting contingent also underperformed. Boxer Manish Kaushik failed to qualify for the next round in his event.
The third day of the Tokyo Olympics is currently underway. So far, table tennis player Manika Batra lost the match 4-0 to tenth seed Sofia Polcanova. Sumit Nagal lost his match in the tennis singles and is out of the race. The men’s middleweight boxing event is to begin shortly. India’s Ashish Kumar competing against China’s Erbieke Tuoheta in the event.
