Actor Kangana Ranaut’s Twitter account was permanently suspended on 4th May for “repeated violations of twitter rules”. This move was taken after she tweeted about the post-poll violence in West Bengal and asked PM Narendra Modi to show his “virat roop form early 2000s,” possibly referring to the 2002 Godhra riots/pogrom.
A Twitter spokesperson clarified, “We’ve been clear that we will take strong enforcement action on behaviour that has the potential to lead to offline harm. The referenced account has been permanently suspended for repeated violations of Twitter Rules specifically our Hateful Conduct policy and Abusive Behaviour policy. We enforce the Twitter Rules judiciously and impartially for everyone on our service.”
This was not the first time Kangana has gotten into trouble with Twitter. After a provocative tweet against the Hindi web series Tandav in which she said it was “time to take (the makers’) heads off” for hurting religious sentiments, restrictions were imposed on her account.
Kangana had previously called out Twitter for suspending ex-US President Donald Trump’s account after the Capitol Hill riots last year and had outraged over the suspension of her sister Rangoli Chandel’s account following her tweet on the Tablighi Jamaat.
Reactions To Kangana’s Twitter Suspension
Kangana has now launched an attack on Twitter by saying, “Twitter has only proved my point. They are Americans, and by birth a white person feels entitled to enslave a brown person. They want to tell you what to think, speak or do, fortunately I have many platforms I can use to raise my voice, including my own art in the form of cinema.”
A large number of celebrities and Twitter users spoke in support of this decision. Ex Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Youtuber Dhruv Rathee made their opinion clear.

Violence in Bengal
In some parts of West Bengal, violence broke out after Mamta Banerjee’s thumping victory in the recently concluded Vidhan Sabha elections. All India Trinamool Congress workers targeted opposition party workers. BJP alleged that it had lost six party members, and AITC claimed to have lost four members. The ISF, a partner in the Left Congress alliance, reported the death of 1 member. A report on the “post-election violence targeting opposition political workers” was demanded from the West Bengal State Government by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
