In Madhya Pradesh even after 15-month of the assembly election, it looks like there is more drama to be unfurled. The Congress Party was enjoying the majority under CM Kamal Nath in Madhya Pradesh. However, the happiness was not a long-lasting one as Jyotiraditya Scindia handed in his resignation along with an estimate of as many as 13 MLA’s and six ministers following his steps on March 10, 2020.
To understand the repercussions of his actions on national as well as the state politics as a whole, we need to understand the formation of MP’s political structure. There is a total of 231 Assembly Seats in MP state out of which one candidate is nominated by the President, leaving 230 seats in the hands of the public.
Before the resignation of Jyotiraditya Scindia along with his MLA’s, Congress was in the majority with 120 seats, followed by BJP with 107 seats and Independent Parties having 4 seats.
Post Scindia’s resignation this numbers changed; the news and rumours of Congress MLA in hopes of joining with BJP started flying around with Jyotiraditya Scindia putting a rest on them by joining BJP.
The rotting disdain of being despised for the post of Chief Minister and the State Congress chief, combined with the Lok Sabha election upset, pushed Congress pioneer Jyotiraditya Scindia to abandon the party.
Following this Maharashtra Shiv Sena leader confirmed that this scenario won’t happen in the state wherein the current government is a political collation formed after 2019 Maharashtra Legislative assembly Election (Maha Vikas Aghadi — NCP, Shiv Sena and INC)
In the developments, 13 of 22 MLA’s had assured their alliance with Congress Party in MP but later on, in video testimonies shared by Scindia revealed their allegiance to the former Congress Party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia.
BJP later on also named Jyotiraditya Scindia as its Rajya Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh. It is essential also to note that the six ministers who had earlier surrendered as administrators from the Cabinet were removed officially by Governor Lalji Tandon as mentioned by Chief Minister Kamal Nath.
BJP only needs to have a majority of 116 or more to establish its state government in Madhya Pradesh with its current majority at 108 with the addition of Scindia. The future of MP looks uncertain at this point, with each political party wooing the ministers with different tactics.
The current Congress government under Kamal Nath was supposed to have a floor test on March 16; however, they won a 10-day reprieve as the assembly session was adjourned till March 26 after a dramatic one-minute address by Governor Lalji Tandon.
The Madhya Pradesh assembly currently has 222 of 230 members and the majority mark is 112. The Congress has 108 MLAs in the House and the support of seven allied legislators. If the resignations of all 22 MLAs are accepted, the Congress’s strength will come way below the new majority mark of 104, and the BJP, with 107 MLAs, can form the government.
This is one riveting political drama to look forward as Kamal Nath still claims that he have enough numbers to form the government.
