‘Just Because We Have Numbers, Can’t Do Terror Politics’: BJP’s Chandra Bose On CAA

Kolkata: Speaking on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), West Bengal Vice-President and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’ grandnephew, Chandra Kumar Bose on January 19, 2020, said that a law should not be imposed on the citizens of a democratic country.

“Our job is to explain to people that we are right and they are wrong. You cannot be abusive. Just because we have numbers today, we cannot do terror politics. Let us go to people explaining benefits of CAA,” Mr Bose was quoted as stating to news agency ANI.

“Once a bill has been passed as an act, it is binding on the state governments, that is in legal position, but in a democratic country you cannot thrust any act on the citizens of our country,” he added.

Mr Bose further said that he had proposed some modifications to the Act to defy Opposition’s criticism.

Even before the citizenship bill was passed, protests opposing the idea of religion-based law rocked the country. West Bengal witnessed the most vehement protests with the ruling Trinamool Congress Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to not implement the Act in her state.

“As long as I am alive, we will not implement the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens. They can dismiss our government if they want. We will not surrender,” Ms Banerjee had said while addressing a rally in Kolkata.

The CAA attempts to fast-track citizenship to six persecuted minorities (namely: Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Parsis and Buddhists) from India’s three Muslim-majority neighbouring countries — Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh — who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
