A Flashback Of Major Events Of 2019: What India Went Through?

This year 2019 would be remembered as a momentous year in India’s history for many reasons be it political or national affairs. The year 2019 is the year when the parliament cleared several important bills, including the most important one that scrapped Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

Let’s take a quick round of some of the significant and memorable news events of 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi 2.0:

In May with the victorious moment covered by world media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resounding election victory for winning Lok sabha election second time continuously. The national polls saw a high-pitched, intense poll campaign as several opposition parties tried to ally against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance to defeat them.

Rahul Gandhi resigns as Congress Chief, leads to a comeback again for Sonia:

After a series of repetitive defeats in the state polls in the last few years, the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was another blow for Congress. After the defeat in national elections, Rahul Gandhi claimed responsibility for the national election loss and said he would quit as the party chief.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Article 370 Scrapped:

On August 5 the Central government came up with a revolutionary verdict to scrap out the special status (Article 370) of the state of J&K and divided it into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Final list for Assam citizens:

After a six-year-long process of preparing a new Assam National Register of Citizens or commonly called as NRC, the government on August 31 came out with a list that included over three crore citizens, but left out over 19 lakh people who claim to be citizens from the list. A draft version of the NRC, was released in July this year, had excluded more than 40 lakh people in the final list.

India’s Ambitious Moon Mission Chandrayaan 2 faced Setback:

Chandrayaan 2, India’s third moon mission underwent a setback on September 7 when lander Vikram lost communication with the ground station of ISRO. This was nearly a month after the July 22 launch of Rs 970-crore mission and the obstacle was reported minutes ere Vikram was expected to land on the lunar surface.

Maharashtra Political game around Government formation:

Elections were held this year in several states including Haryana, Maharashtra and others, but Maharashtra was in the limelight. The politics in the state of Maharashtra saw a dramatic turn of events of making and breaking of government after the poll results as the BJP fell apart with its decades-old alliance Shiv Sena.

Ram Lalla disputed Land:

The Supreme Court came up with a historic verdict on the century-old legal dispute over the Ram Lalla – Babri Masjid Ayodhya dispute land. The 16th-century Babri mosque stood before it was demolished in 1992 by Hindu activists, the Supreme Court in November declared that the disputed land belongs solely to the deity Ram Lalla or it is Ram Janam-Bhoomi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Ayodhya judgement was like a golden chapter in the history of the nation and the Supreme court has shown strong determination. In December, the top court dismissed all petitions seeking review of its verdict.

The protest of over Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA):

The parliament on December 11 came up with a cleared yet controversial legislation – the Citizenship Amendment Act–which makes religion test for citizenship for the first time in India and revolves around most of Indians against the government. The government says the CAA will help non-Muslims minorities who fled religious persecution in Muslim-dominated Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and will provide Indian citizenship. Protests against the law across the country intensified after police action on students at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University on December 15.

Yediyurappa is Back:

The BJP’s BS Yediyurappa was sworn as Karnataka Chief Minister fourth time this July. Before his swearing-in, the 76-year-old changed the spelling of his name from “Yeddyurappa” to “Yediyurappa”. The BJP at first instance had formed the government with a narrow majority, but in December month by-poll win gave the party enough numbers in the assembly.

A rebirth for Kulbhushan Jadhav:

In a big win for India in, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the court ruled in July that Pakistan must review the death sentence of Kulbhushan Jadhav. His death sentence “should remain suspended until Pakistan effectively reviews and reconsiders the conviction and sentence,” said the UN court, coinciding with India’s stand that Pakistan had violated the Vienna convention

In this way, the year 2019 ended up for India in a few ups and downs, but as the famous lines “the show must go on”, the same way the life and journey must go on.
